Chris wasnât sure why heâd told Lexie about his mom, and the truth about his father. Maybe heâd hoped sheâd open up about her own past, since he knew nothing about her life before he met her, yet that hadnât happened.
She seemed focused on running her business, but hadnât she said something about knowing Skip for the past five years? What about before then? She hadnât talked about her life before moving to Great Falls, Montana.
Her prayer had touched him, though. Asking for Godâs support and guidance was something his mother would have done. And she had a point about forgiveness.
The idea of meeting his biological father was terrifying. More so because he wasnât sure heâd be able to hold his temper in check. Knowing his father was sitting in the lap of luxury while he and his mom had scraped by infuriated him.
Why hadnât the old man sent child support? And why hadnât his mother forced the issue?
He shook off the depressing thoughts and focused on his meal. The food was surprisingly good, especially since he hadnât eaten since breakfast.
âBy the way, I have a tour tomorrow morning,â Lexie said, interrupting the silence.
He shot her a quick glance. âI thought you didnât have anything scheduled?â
âA woman called while I was on my way here, asking for a tour for her and her husband before they head home.â
He frowned. âI donât like it.â
She arched a brow. âWhatâs not to like? Her name is Ashley Rauland. Her husband is Derek. I have her phone number if you want to check them out.â
His scowl deepened. âIt just seems odd that she called right after Skip was murdered.â
She shook her head. âLook, I get youâre a cop, Chris. But this woman is a tourist. How could she have learned about Skip or his murder so quickly? Iâm not even sure itâs hit the news yet. Besides, Iâm not in a position to turn down a paying customer. If the weather cooperates, weâre going.â
He found himself hoping the weather wouldnât cooperate. A big storm blowing in from the mountains would be very helpful about now. Then a thought occurred to him. âWhat about the fact that you donât have a mechanic to check out the plane?â
She pursed her lips. âIâm sure the plane will be fine for one more flight, but you bring up a good point. I need to call Harry, to let him know we need to hire another mechanic, as soon as possible.â She sighed, her expression turning grim. âFinding one in the middle of tourist season wonât be easy.â
He wanted to offer to help her locate one, but quickly stopped himself. He didnât know any plane mechanics, and really, this weird attraction he felt for Lexie was becoming a problem. Sure, she was beautiful, inside and out. Her kindness, her dedication to Skip despite how heâd turned against her was admirable.
But thatâs all he could allow himself to do, admire her from afar. No more holding her close and definitely no more kissing.
