Chris wasn’t sure why he’d told Lexie about his mom, and the truth about his father. Maybe he’d hoped she’d open up about her own past, since he knew nothing about her life before he met her, yet that hadn’t happened.

She seemed focused on running her business, but hadn’t she said something about knowing Skip for the past five years? What about before then? She hadn’t talked about her life before moving to Great Falls, Montana.

Her prayer had touched him, though. Asking for God’s support and guidance was something his mother would have done. And she had a point about forgiveness.

The idea of meeting his biological father was terrifying. More so because he wasn’t sure he’d be able to hold his temper in check. Knowing his father was sitting in the lap of luxury while he and his mom had scraped by infuriated him.

Why hadn’t the old man sent child support? And why hadn’t his mother forced the issue?

He shook off the depressing thoughts and focused on his meal. The food was surprisingly good, especially since he hadn’t eaten since breakfast.

“By the way, I have a tour tomorrow morning,” Lexie said, interrupting the silence.

He shot her a quick glance. “I thought you didn’t have anything scheduled?”

“A woman called while I was on my way here, asking for a tour for her and her husband before they head home.”

He frowned. “I don’t like it.”

She arched a brow. “What’s not to like? Her name is Ashley Rauland. Her husband is Derek. I have her phone number if you want to check them out.”

His scowl deepened. “It just seems odd that she called right after Skip was murdered.”

She shook her head. “Look, I get you’re a cop, Chris. But this woman is a tourist. How could she have learned about Skip or his murder so quickly? I’m not even sure it’s hit the news yet. Besides, I’m not in a position to turn down a paying customer. If the weather cooperates, we’re going.”

He found himself hoping the weather wouldn’t cooperate. A big storm blowing in from the mountains would be very helpful about now. Then a thought occurred to him. “What about the fact that you don’t have a mechanic to check out the plane?”

She pursed her lips. “I’m sure the plane will be fine for one more flight, but you bring up a good point. I need to call Harry, to let him know we need to hire another mechanic, as soon as possible.” She sighed, her expression turning grim. “Finding one in the middle of tourist season won’t be easy.”

He wanted to offer to help her locate one, but quickly stopped himself. He didn’t know any plane mechanics, and really, this weird attraction he felt for Lexie was becoming a problem. Sure, she was beautiful, inside and out. Her kindness, her dedication to Skip despite how he’d turned against her was admirable.

But that’s all he could allow himself to do, admire her from afar. No more holding her close and definitely no more kissing.
